Sailor of a Naval Storming Party

British sailors were often formed into Naval Storming Parties as they were regarded as elite shock troops. One such party suffered heavy casualties at the defeat at Gate Pa in 1864.

Sailors also manned artillery, including a 110 pdr Armstrong Gun used to bombard Gate Pa.
